Chicks will be back in Spring !!!
As we head into late Autumn and the VERY first frost is just around the corner, we have had to bid farewell to our baby chickens until the warmer weather returns in Spring.
It is far too cold for us to keep them here in the Nursery over the next few months, but we'll be sure to have them for sale once the weather starts to warm up again. Early October is most likely when the first ones will be welcomed back, and we look forward to offering them to our eager Poultry loving friends once again!!
Our Organic Country Heritage Chicken feeds are available ALL YEAR LONG, as well as feeders and drinkers.
COVER CROPS for Autumn sowing
Right now is a good time to put in a 'Green Manure', or 'Cover Crop' in an area of your vegie garden that you plan on leaving fallow over the Winter months.Your Garden has been in intensive production over the Spring and Summer period and this is a perfect time to assist it in it's revitalisation process.
Cover crops are designed to IMPROVE soil quality, RESTORE soil fertility and ADD a good amount of Organic Matter into your Garden beds. They will also help to improve drainage at the same time.
Legume and Clover seeds are actually 'Nitrogen fixers'. ... this simply put, means, they will take Nitrogen from the air and transfer it to the Plant and its roots ( you will notice nodules formed on the roots of these legumes as they mature) . When the plant dies, or is turned into the soil after flowering, the Nitrogen will be released into the soil, and become available to the plants that will follow on.
Brilliant ... free Nitrogen added to your soil at NO extra cost along with LOADS of Organic matter !!! Another added bonus comes with the ground-cover they will provide over the Winter period.
Currently we have a good range of Seed specifically meant for this purpose. Cover cropping will go a long way to improving you vegetable beds prior to spring planting !
Great assortment of Winter Vegie Seedlings
The weather is still lovely, making it a great time to put in a few more vegetables... there are plenty of things that will grow in the cool weather ahead, including all the Brassicas, Onions, English Spinach, Garlic etc.
In particular we would like to recommend 'Corn Salad'.. one of the BEST salad greens for the Winter garden. Many Australians are not familiar with this delightful winter vegetable... delicious little rosettes of leaves that will thrive in the FROSTIEST of conditions. They are a favourite in Europe and Canada, and if you leave a few plants to go to seed, they will germinate the following year as soon as the weather cools off... just BRILLIANT !!!
The make a terrific salad just on their own, or mixed in with Lettuce, Kale, Rocket etc.

Cyclamens are back in town !!
These incredible Corms are capable of producing an AMAZING amount of Flowers over a VERY LONG period of time. Even though they are thought of as 'cool weather' plants , they regularly start to produce blooms by the end of Summer ... and.. can continue on right into the Autumn and Winter. They are easy care and basically require little attention. Give them light position indoors or out, and over the winter months they enjoy a nightly sojourn outside the back door for an extra bit of evening chill while you have your heater running. They benefit from a liquid feed and prefer watering from below their leaves. There are SO MANY flower colours to choose from as well as a striking range of Foliage. We will have a constantly changing collection over the next 6 months!

The Beauty of Orchids
Looking for a gift for a Gardening enthusiast ??? You can't go past an orchid ! They're easy to look after and will flower for ages, lasting FAR longer than a bunch of flowers. In general they need a light spot and minimal water, and good gardeners will successfully be able to bring them back into flower. Why not choose an Orchid next time you are looking for the perfect living gift.
Who can imagine, Pasta Sauce without Basil, Tabouli without Parsley, or Curries without Coriander. They are essential to our cooking and we all know, dried herbs just don't make the grade !!!
This season, as always, we are carrying an EXTENSIVE range for all our budding "Master Chefs" out there. Herbs that will thrive in our sunny Canberra climate, as well as a few unusual ones for those of you up for a challenge. Choose from our large pots of "Cut and Cook" ready to use ZEST herbs from Oasis, or our HUGE variety of Culinary, Medicinal and Tea Herbs from the Renaissance range.
Remember.. even on the tiniest Balcony we can usually find a spot for at least ONE single pot of parsley..!!!!!!
