Quality without compromise, always something different
hot tips for september...
Spring is in the air! As the season changes and the days become warmer, so begins the gradual appearance of early flowering blossoms and bulbs. It is one of my favorite times to be out in the garden, enjoying the emergence of bulbs of daffodils, snowflakes and jonquils like long lost friends. The deciduous trees such as ornamental cherry and pears are bursting with color much to the delight of the bees. Many varieties of deciduous trees such as Birches, Crab apples, Japanese maples and Prunus are still dormant at the moment so there is plenty of time to plant them out.
One of the most striking spring shrubs is about to burst in to flower ,look out for Forsythia ,it's a lovely deciduous shrub that can add a pop of brilliant yellow to your spring garden. It loves a sunny well drained spot and the occasional prune and can even make a wonderful hedge! If you happen to visit Tulip Top Gardens in the Spring you will see one there. Of course we have plenty in stock!
Our nursery is a sensory delight at the moment with many scented plants coming into bloom. There is something for everyone...Daphne’s, Jasmine, and of course the irresistible native Boronia.
Shade loving Camellia japonica have taken center stage with their stunning double blooms and are perfect for that WOW factor in the garden or pot. The warmer sunny days are perfect for planting and rejuvenating the garden after winter. Planting compost, fertilizer and mulch can all be added not. I find Healthy Earth Instant Clay breaker is particularly useful in our heavy clay soils in Canberra, it helps to aerate the soil and improve growth and nutrient uptake. (I keep some handy for every time I plant!)
In the edible garden this month it's time to prepare your soil by adding organic matter such cow manure and compost to ensure a 'bumper crop'. The locally produced organic Landtasia compost is great natural choice.
The first tomatoes of the season have started to arrive but still need a warm spot at night. For those of you keen to get a head start, seeds can be started indoors now. It's time now to plant strawberries, rhubarb, silver beet, spring onions, lettuce and Asian greens. Rose pruning should be completed now as they are starting to shoot away and fertilizer such as Sudden Impact for Roses can be applied to existing bushes to give them a good start. There is still a great range of new season roses available and ready to plant.Enjoy the sunshine and get busy planting

As we emerge from the quiet dormancy of winter the first signs of spring have started to appear in our gardens. Branches once bare are now adorned with bud and blossom and always seem to bring a sense of hope and joy . The irresistible scent of daphne entices us back into the garden and the warm crisp sunny days encourage us to get busy planting . August although not quite spring, is a wonderful time to be improving your soil with compost and clay breaker in preparation for the season ahead.
The time is perfect for bare root roses and trees which should be planted by the end of the month so they settle in well before Spring. Our Magnolias are laden with gorgeous furry buds promising to burst into flower and there is a sea of stunning Erica for late winter colour. August also shines the spotlight on native grevillea which are full of buds and flowers and are wonderful for attracting and creating a natural habitat for birds in your garden. There is a growing awareness about encouraging bees into our gardens to benefit pollination and to sustain their general populations. One particular plant that has been a standout in our own garden over winter has been Teucrium 'Silver and Sapphires'which is still covered in sweet blue flowers against a silvery foliage and is heaven for the bees!
In the edible department this month are delicious rhubarb, asparagus, strawberry, potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes for all the 'foodies'out there . These are bare rooted tubers, crowns and runners ready to plant soon. Another true treasure that somehow amazingly transforms itself from a dormant woody stem to stunningly beautiful blooms in Spring is the Tree Paeony! We are all in love! Hard to grow? NO! Drought tolerant YES! It sounds too good to be true, come see the wow!!
